Junior Manager wants to develop into her role

Background:

A Junior Manager with eight direct reports. She had worked for her employer for eight years since leaving school. She was recently promoted from within her peer group.

Her range of responsibilities included selection and recruitment, training and managing the team, ensure adherence to industry compliance standards and provide cover for her Line Manager.

Her Line Manager was the New Business Sales Manager.

She expressed her concerns, fears and aspiration around her recent promotion.

The Operations Director sponsored her for coaching.

Our approach:

In collaboration with her Operations Director her Development Objective was defined and agreed. It was: "I am a Stronger Manager". Her Development Objective was reviewed and her Goals agreed at the goal setting review session with her Coach. Key personal and professional benefits of achieving the objective were identified. For example:

  • I will be less stressed
  • Boost staff morale
  • I am in control of my supervisors
  • I will feel more confident
  • I will be making a contribution

The engagement information and the coaching schedule were explained and the contract was signed off. The requirements of the coaching interaction, process and how the relationship works were agreed. Her objectives, goals and benefits were reviewed and her motivation and commitment checked out. The coaching programme continued for the agreed contractual term.

Her progress was evaluated and measured at specific intervals during the engagement and with her agreement elements were fed back to the sponsor.


Outcomes and benefits:

  • She learned to manage the department so that productivity increased and everyone became more organised
  • She became completely confident and competent in letter writing
  • She gained more confidence and was able to support junior staff
  • She developed a training programme to ensure that everyone became competent at a basic level
  • She found it mentally challenging but productive. It made her look at situations from different perspectives
  • She learned a lot about herself and the functioning of her department
  • She designed and implemented new processes and procedures to ensure company compliance with industry standards
